“Explore Your Options!”

BAND

Have you ever wanted to play an instrument? Sign up for band class with Ms. Kusunoki. Learn to play music for concerts. Available instruments are: flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, baritone, tuba and percussion. Check out the KIS Band Web site

PIANO

Learn to read music, play piano, and write your own songs.  Please note that this class is intended for beginning piano players (less than 6 months of private instruction outside of school).

YEARBOOK PRODUCTION 

This course introduces students to planning and producing the school’s yearbook and using technology tools for production.
Designing and completing page layouts; writing of copy, captions, and headlines; basic photography techniques and skills; and meeting deadlines are required. 

An application is required for acceptance into the KIS yearbook staff class.  If you are interested in taking yearbook class, please contact Ms. Romfo at sromfo@kis.k12.hi.us for the application and more information. 


INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTING - View the VIDEO

Introduction to Computing is a computer class that prepares students for the technological society we live in. This course will increase the student’s understanding of and ability to use modern technology and computer software in their future endeavors. 
Students discover, collaborate, solve problems, and create by using a variety of resources, computer programs and technologies.

INTRODUCTION TO CRAFTS
 
Objectives
1. Develop basic knowledge, techniques, and skills used in making crafts.
2. Explore a variety of craft materials and techniques.
Description
In this class we will make craft projects.  The class will craft with paper, fabric, metals and other materials.  Also, this course will introduce students to many aspects of art such as color theory and the elements and principles of art and design.  Crafts class will develop students’ knowledge, skills and values through: art making, art appreciation, exposure to a variety of 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional and electronic media.
Assignment Expectations
1. Be creative and do your best.
2. Use class time wisely to work on task.
Evaluation Criteria
Students will be graded on completed projects, participation, and work habits. They will also be graded on originality, ability to follow directions, and craftsmanship.

INTRODUCTION TO ART AND DESIGN

This course focuses on the exploration of art media and techniques for personal expression and provides students with further opportunities to apply the elements and principles of design in imaginative solutions to visual problems. Art forms of historical periods and diverse cultures are also studied as contextual introductions to the art processes. This course focuses on Visual Arts Content Standards.

FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCE

Basic cooking and sewing skills. Your kitchen lab group will plan, prepare, and serve various foods. You will also learn to maintain a clean, safe working area. You will be introduced to sewing techiques and complete a community service project.

SPANISH

Learn to speak Spanish while cooking, singing, and doing projects with Profe! This class is taught with an emphasis in functional Spanish so that students have the confidence and knowledge of how to be practical global citizens. For example, at the end of the course, students will be able to order food and read menus in Spanish, ask for and give directions, and explain key cultural events from around the Spanish-speaking world.

KEYBOARDING

Does it take forever to type an assignment because you have to hunt for the correct keys? If so, this class is for you. You will learn to type without looking at the keys, using proper fingering with speed and accuracy. You will dramatically increase your ability to type papers and reports.

ENGINEERING

This elective is appropriate for 7th and 8th grade students who are curious about the world of design and engineering. The major focus of the course is to expose students to design process, engineering skills and tools, research and analysis, technical documentation, global and human impacts, communication methods, and teamwork. The class provides students the opportunity to exercise the knowledge learned in core classes while developing skills and understanding of the course concepts through group activity, project, and problem-based learning. As members of an engineering design team, students are challenged to continually hone their interpersonal skills, creative abilities and understanding of the design process. Syllabus
