P.E. Uniform Policy

GRADE 7 PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM


Main Idea:  Learning about health and fitness and engaging in physical activity throughout life that enables a person to lead a healthier and more productive life.  Being healthy throughout life can produce many positive benefits for the body as well as the mind.  It is our responsibility to teach and guide our children to become independent, confident, and productive people in society.  We strive to teach the importance of being healthy, fit, and self-confident.  


Objective:  The objective of the seventh grade physical education program is to introduce many of the skills, concepts, and activities that lead to a healthy lifestyle.  Students will learn the basic skills that enable them to successfully participate in various physical activities and will also learn the basic concepts to be healthy and physically fit.  


GRADE 8 PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM


Main Idea:  Learning about health and fitness and engaging in physical activity in the adolescent years sows the seed for good habits and practices throughout life.  Creating positive physical experiences that teaches and guides students to become confident, to endure and overcome fears and obstacles enables a person to lead a healthier and more productive life.  Being healthy throughout life can produce many positive benefits for the body as well as the mind.  It is our responsibility to teach and guide our children to become independent and realize their potential by striving to do their best at all times, become leaders and be helpful to others.  We strive to teach our students the importance of hard work, humility, kindness, respect and consideration.  


Objective:  The objective of the eighth grade physical education program is to build and expand upon the concepts fitness, health, and sport by applying the basic knowledge learned in these areas through research, projects and presentations.  We will explore the relationships between these areas to improve and sustain a healthy and productive life

Team Sports

Students will be introduced to a variety of team sports.  Each sport will require the students to learn the basic skills that are involved within each sport and eventually apply it to a team-like setting.  Students will participate in drills, skills tests, cognitive tests, games and activities related to each sport.

State of Hawaii performance/content standards will be addressed in each activity.  Activities may include basketball, volleyball, flag football, soccer, softball, ultimate Frisbee, team relays, etc.

Body Conditioning

This standards-based class is a semester course focusing on the following objectives:  physical fitness, physical activity, character and knowledge of strength and conditioning activities both physically and mentally.

Activities may also include dance, gymnastics, fitness, fitness games, plyometrics and non-traditional games.   Plyometrics will be used to improve not only aerobic capacity, but also to develop muscle strength, muscle power, bone strength, balance, agility, speed, resistance to injury, sports performance and a more positive attitude towards fitness activities.

Polynesian Dance

This course is designed for students to strengthen physical movement forms, concepts, principles and skills through participation in a variety of Polynesian dance activities.  Students will apply a variety of locomotor and non-locomotor movement skills in combinations to various Polynesian dances including dances of Hawai’i, both hula kahiko and hula ‘auana, as well as dances of New Zealand (maori) and Tahiti (Tahitian).  Students will be introduced to a variety of Polynesian music and the related musical concepts of beat, rhythm, tempo, etc.  Polynesian culture will be explored to encourage students to develop an understanding of the various dances they learn and perform.  As a result of this standards-based course, a variety of movement forms and self-expression will improve and Polynesian dance as a lifetime activity will be reinforced.  

Students may also be given an opportunity to perform at school assemblies or programs.

7th Grade Teen Health

This required semester course addresses the 4 dimensions of health in a “hands-on-health” approach. Lessons and activities are age-appropriate and aligned to Hawaii State content areas/standards and national standards. Students learn core concepts in Teen Health and practice skills that promote healthy behaviors and avoid unsafe risks.
Students demonstrate understanding of health concepts in PSAs, commercials, individual and group projects and more.
